​​What is India's Model Approval?

Section 22 of the Legal Metrology Act of 2009 says that the model approval certificate is given out by the Legal Metrology Department. The approval is given to companies that make or import weights and measuring tools.

Model approval is a type of legal metrology certificate that is given to people who import or make weights and measuring tools. Section 22 of the LMA (Legal Metrology Act) says that the people who import or make these products must apply to the Legal Metrology Department of the Central Government in Delhi for model approval and get it.

The standard application process includes filling out an application, sending in documents, and testing a sample. If the product meets Indian metrology standards, the applicant is granted model approval. 

​​India's Model Approval Eligibility Criteria

 1. According to the rules of the Legal Metrology Model Approval Certificate, the weights and measuring products of the importer or manufacturer must meet the regulatory requirements of the Legal Metrology Department.

 2. A model must be approved in a certain way before anyone can make or import weights or measuring units. The model approval under the legal metrology registration certificate is given when the authority receives the prescribed fee.

 3. Also, if the authority is sure that a model of weights or measures approved in a country other than India meets the standards set by the Legal Metrology Act, he can approve that model with or without a test, depending on what he thinks is best.

Exceptions :

 1. No model approval is needed for cast iron, brass, bullion, carat weight, beam scale, or length measures (not measuring tapes).

 2. These goods are usually used in retail trade to measure textiles or wood, with capacity measures not exceeding twenty liters.

 3. These capacity measures are usually used in retail stores to measure kerosene, milk, and alcoholic drinks that can be drunk.

​​What Documents Are Needed in India for Model Approval?

To get the Model Approval, you must send in the following:

 1. A Certificate of Incorporation

 2. Any other business licenses that your company needs

 3. Two photos of the applicant the size of a passport

 4. A form that has been properly filled out

 5. A diagram of how the product weighs and/or measures

 6. A description of how the product will be sealed

 7. If you're an importer, you have to sign a statement that says the product hasn't been changed before it goes on sale in India.

The Legal Metrology Department has different ways to give out Model Approval Certificates based on whether the applicant is an importer or a manufacturer:

Manufacturer's Process

If the applicant is a manufacturer, the Directorate General of the Legal Metrology Department has to test the product. Here are the steps to do it:

 1. Get the documents you need.

 2. Fill out the application form to apply.

 3. Send the properly filled-out application form, the documents, and a

 4. Send a sample of the product to the department of legal metrology.

 5. Pay the fees for approving the model.

 6. Before sending the sample to the Directorate-General for testing, the department would do an initial check of the documents.

 7. You'll get the Legal Metrology Certificate if the product meets the rules set by the Legal Metrology Department.

Process for Importers

If the applicant is an importer, there is no need to test the product:

 1. Get the documents you need.

 2. Fill out the form to apply.

 3. Send the properly filled-out application form, the documents, and a

 5. Pay the fees for approving the model.

 6. The documents would be looked at by the department for the first time.

Failure to obtain model approval results in a penalty.

Anyone who fails or forgets to submit a model of any size or weight for approval will be fined. This fine can go up to twenty thousand rupees. Again, for the second or subsequent offense(s), the authority can put the person in jail for up to a year and also fine them.
